A Growing Community

The useful life of any facility, especially in healthcare is limited. This is true for Thomas Hospital's current birth center which in the very near future will no longer be able to meet the needs of the growing community.

Baldwin County's population is expanding at a particularly high rate of growth. In the next four years, the population of those between the ages of 20 and 39 is projected to grow by 10.5% bringing numerous new families to the area.

Last year, Thomas Hospital's 1,100 deliveries exceeded its space capacity by several hundred babies and projections show that Thomas Hospital will deliver 1,500 babies by 2018.

The current newborn nursery is simply too small, and on busy days the nursery exceeds capacity which presents challenges to the physicians and staff who care for the newborns.

Despite converting a conference room to create another delivery room, there are times now when a mom can't get a room in the current birth unit, and must recover instead in a room on a different floor.  When moms have to recover on a different floor, the hospital must allocate additional personnel for security.

The new birth center will resolve these challenges and offer new opportunities for Thomas Hospital's patients.
